Sports SUmmary: SU field hockey disappointed and cross country continues to impress.

The men’s basketball team will look to improve over last year’s disappointing season.

In a poll by a select panel, Syracuse men’s basketball was picked to finish 10th in the ACC this upcoming season. The Orange finished ninth last year and were eliminated in the second round of the conference tournament.

Sophomore guard Judah Mintz was also named as a member of the Preseason All-ACC Second team, receiving 39 votes.

With incoming head coach Adrian Autry and a few new players, such as sophomore guard JJ Starling, the team is looking to bounce back after last year’s disappointing season.

The season starts next Monday when SU plays New Hampshire at the JMA Wireless Dome at 7:00 p.m., the first game in the post-Jim Boeheim era.

Massive rally by Virginia sparks early ACC exit for SU field hockey

Syracuse field hockey was eliminated in the ACC Quarterfinals after blowing a 2-1 lead with less than 2:45 left to the Virginia Cavaliers.

The Orange were dominant throughout most of the contest, obtaining a 2-0 lead at halftime and limiting Virginia to just five shots. However, a goal by Virginia in the first 30 seconds of the final frame and two more in the last three minutes resulted in a crushing 3-2 defeat.

After the defeat, the team will patiently wait to see if they receive a bid to participate in the ACC Tournament.

Men finish as runner-up, women get fourth at ACC Championships

No.4 Syracuse men’s cross country finished as the runner-up at the ACC Championships, while the women’s team finished in fourth.

Three men finished inside the top ten, including Paul O’Donnell, who came in second. The redshirt senior crossed the 8k finish line in 23:08.2, just five seconds behind University of North Carolina’s Parker Wolfe, who won the individual title.

O’Donnell’s outing is the best finish by a Syracuse runner at the ACC Championships since Justyn Knight won the meet in 2017.

Thanks to a strong team performance, spearheaded by Savannah Roark who finished in ninth, the women’s team finished two spots better in the contest than they did a year ago.

Both teams will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on Nov. 10 and 11. The meet will take place in the Bronx.
